Top Scenic Spots Along the South Klondike Highway

Experience the Breathtaking Beauty of Alaska and the Yukon with Skagway Tours

The South Klondike Highway isn’t just a road — it’s a journey through some of the most jaw-dropping scenery in North America. Stretching from Skagway, Alaska, through British Columbia and into the Yukon, this historic route follows the trail of the gold rush stampeders and offers visitors an unforgettable blend of rugged peaks, glacial lakes, waterfalls, and wildlife. Whether you’re cruising in for the day or spending a few nights in the area, Skagway Tours offers expertly guided trips that reveal the hidden gems along this iconic highway.

Here are just a few of the scenic spots we see along the South Klondike Highway.

Pitchfork Falls

One of the tallest waterfalls in the area, Pitchfork Falls cascades nearly 2,000 feet down the mountain near mile marker 7. Fed by meltwater from the alpine peaks above, it’s especially dramatic in late spring and early summer. Look for it on the right as you climb out of Skagway, just past the US Customs Office.

Bridal Veil Falls & International Falls

Around mile 11 – 15, you’ll come to a cluster of waterfalls, including the ever-photogenic Bridal Veil Falls and International Falls. These falls tumble through rocky ravines framed by dense green forest and misty peaks. In the winter and early spring, the icy blue water contrasts beautifully with the snow-covered terrain.

White Pass Summit and the “Welcome to Alaska” Sign

Crossing into the White Pass Summit is one of the most memorable moments along the South Klondike Highway. Sitting at nearly 3,300 feet in elevation, this historic mountain pass marks the divide between coastal Alaska and the interior Yukon. Once the grueling route of hopeful gold rush stampeders, it’s now a breathtaking drive filled with panoramic views of snow-dusted peaks, glacial valleys, and rugged alpine tundra.

Just beyond the summit, you’ll find one of the most popular photo stops on the route — the “Welcome to Alaska” sign. It’s the perfect place to stretch your legs, snap a picture, and officially commemorate your journey into (or out of) Alaska. Whether shrouded in mist or sparkling under a clear blue sky, the backdrop here never disappoints.

Tormented Valley and Summit Lake

True to its name, Tormented Valley is a windswept expanse of alpine tundra unlike anywhere else on the route. Shaped over millennia by shifting glaciers and harsh mountain weather, this surreal landscape features stunted evergreens, scattered glacial boulders, and shimmering ponds that reflect the surrounding peaks. Just beyond lies Summit Lake, sitting at nearly 3,300 feet near the U.S.–Canada border at White Pass. Its deep-blue waters and sweeping views of the Coast Mountains offer a striking contrast to the rugged tundra of the valley below.

Together, these two locations showcase the raw beauty of the high alpine — where serenity meets the wild. Keep your camera ready for breathtaking scenery and possible wildlife sightings, including mountain goats, marmots, and even the occasional bear.

Yukon Suspension Bridge

For the adventurous traveler, the Yukon Suspension Bridge at Tutshi Canyon (pronounced TOO-shy) offers both adrenaline and incredible views. Walk across the swaying bridge for a thrilling look down at the whitewater rushing below — and take in the expansive views of surrounding cliffs and pine forests.

While not visible from the highway, this incredible stop is a destination for the following tours: White Pass Summit & Yukon Suspension Bridge Tour, and the Bridge, Puppies, & Summit Triple Combo.

Tutshi Lake

This long, glacier-fed lake offers unbeatable serenity and reflection shots. The still waters mirror the mountains above, especially in the early morning or just before dusk. It’s also a great place for kayaking or fishing, and many tours make a stop here for photo ops and a breath of fresh mountain air.
